5 beaches within reach of central Athens

One of the best things about Athens is how quickly you can swap city streets for sandy shores. Here are five great options, plus tips on how to get there using public transport or taxi.

Just a caveat – a quick look on Google Maps will reveal heaps more beaches than I’ve listed here. These are just some examples!

1. Kavouri Beach, Voula

Kavouri Beach is a favourite with locals for its relaxed atmosphere, clear water and long stretch of sand. Located in the Voula area, it is actually made up of several small coves and a main beach, with plenty of space to spread out.

The water is shallow and calm, making it ideal for families or anyone who just wants a gentle swim. There are sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, but you can also lay your towel on the sand for free. You will find a few cafés and snack bars nearby, as well as shaded spots under the pine trees.

To get there from central Athens, take Metro Line 2 (red) to Elliniko station. From there, hop on bus 122 towards Saronida and get off at the Kavouri stop. The beach is a short walk from the bus stop. Alternatively, a taxi from the centre will take about 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

2. Astir Beach, Vouliagmeni

If you’re after a more luxurious beach experience, Astir Beach in Vouliagmeni is the place to go. This private, organised beach is famous for its soft sand, crystal-clear water and top-notch facilities. You’ll find stylish sunbeds, attentive service, changing rooms, showers, and even a spa.

There are several excellent restaurants and bars on site, and the whole place has a relaxed but exclusive feel. Entry is not cheap, especially on weekends or in high season, but many say it is worth it for the comfort and cleanliness.

To get there, take Metro Line 2 to Elliniko, then bus 122 towards Saronida. Get off at the “Astir Beach” stop. From there, it is a short walk to the entrance. You can also take a taxi from the city centre, which will take around 35 minutes.

3. Grand Resort Lagonissi

This one’s a little further out, but Grand Resort Lagonissi offers a beautiful private beach, luxury facilities and a peaceful setting on a peninsula south of Athens. The beach is sandy, the water is clear, and the resort provides everything from sunbeds and towels to water sports and beachside dining.

While the resort is primarily for guests, you can purchase a day pass to use the beach and facilities, and it’s surprisingly affordable. It is a great option if you want to treat yourself or celebrate a special occasion.

To get there from central Athens, take Metro Line 2 to Elliniko, then bus 122 to Saronida. From Saronida, you can take a short taxi ride to the resort. Alternatively, a taxi from Athens centre will take about 45 minutes. If you’re driving, there’s parking available at the resort.

4. Akti Iliou Beach, Alimos

Akti Iliou, also known as Akanthus Beach, is one of the most popular organised beaches along the Alimos seafront. It is close to the city, lively, and has a fun, youthful vibe.

The beach is sandy, with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, and there are several beach bars, cafés and restaurants right on the sand. In the evenings, the area comes alive with music and events, making it a great spot for both daytime relaxation and a night out.

To get there, take the tram from Syntagma or Neos Kosmos towards Voula and get off at the “Akti Iliou” stop. The beach entrance is just across the road from the tram stop. You can also reach Alimos by taxi in about 20 minutes from the city centre.

5. Edem Beach, Palaio Faliro

Edem Beach is the most accessible beach from central Athens, located in the Palaio Faliro area. It’s a free public beach with a relaxed, local feel. The sand is soft, the water is usually calm, and there are showers and changing cabins available.

You’ll find a few cafés and tavernas nearby, perfect for a post-swim snack or coffee. Edem is a great choice if you want a quick escape from the city without spending much or travelling far.

Take the tram from Syntagma towards Voula and get off at the “Edem” stop. The beach is right next to the tram station, so you can be in the water within minutes of arriving. A taxi from the centre will take about 15 minutes, depending on traffic.
