5 of my favourite bars in Athens

Over the years I’ve been living here, I’ve found myself returning to a handful of bars that each capture something special about the city. Here are my five favourites – I definitely recommend seeking them out.

  1. Black Duck Garden

5 Ioannou Paparrigopoulou, Panepistimiou

Tucked away behind the National Historical Museum, Black Duck Garden feels like a secret oasis in the heart of the city. The entrance is easy to miss, but step through the gate and you’ll find yourself in a lush, shaded courtyard that feels a world away from the traffic and noise of Panepistimiou.

The indoor garden is dotted with tables under trees and fairy lights, and the vibe is relaxed but elegant. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over a glass of wine or a classic cocktail and forget you’re in the centre of Athens. The menu is thoughtful, with a good selection of Greek and international spirits, and there’s often live jazz or art events in the evenings.

2. Madeira Bar

6 Agiou Nektariou, Irakleio

Madeira Bar is a little gem of a bar in Irakleio, a leafy northern suburb that doesn’t usually make it onto most tourist itineraries. Walk down the narrow entrance alleyway and you’ll feel like you’re in Mykonos. FYI, they make the absolute best aperol spritz in Athens, hands down.

There’s a lively outdoor area for warm evenings, and the music is always spot on – think indie, soul and the occasional Greek classic. If you want to experience Athens away from the tourist crowds, Madeira Bar is perfect.

3. Deos

2 Panormou, Ampelokipoi

Deos is a stunning rooftop bar and restaurant perched on the 24th floor of Apollon Tower in Panormou, giving it some of the best panoramic views in Athens. Just steps from Panormou metro station, Deos has a rooftop pool, a stylish cocktail bar and a restaurant serving Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

The atmosphere is modern and luxurious, with floor-to-ceiling windows and an open-air terrace where you can soak up the cityscape. Whether you’re after a sunset cocktail, a special dinner, or just want to see Athens from above, Deos is a memorable spot that brings a touch of glamour to the city’s bar scene.

4. Anglais Athens

2 Karaiskaki, Monastiraki

Another good spot with a view, Anglais in Monastiraki is a rooftop bar at the top of the Emporikon Hotel, with panoramic views of the Acropolis, the city skyline and the bustling streets below. The décor is cool and retro, with a nod to British style, but the atmosphere is pure Athens – lively, friendly and unpretentious.

The cocktail menu is inventive, with both classics and house specials, and there’s a good selection of wines and beers. It’s a perfect spot for sunset, but equally fun later in the evening when the city lights come on.

5. Kuku

8 Agias Irinis, Monastiraki

Kuku is a lively, creative cocktail bar tucked just off buzzing Agias Irinis Square in the heart of Monastiraki. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming, with friendly bartenders, colourful décor and a playlist that always seems to hit the right note.

Kuku is known for its quirky cocktails, often featuring Greek spirits and local ingredients, as well as a solid selection of classics. It attracts a mix of locals, expats and visitors, making it a great place to strike up a conversation or simply watch the world go by from the outdoor tables.
