Athens neighbourhood guide | the east

The east of Athens is a mostly residential area stretching from the city’s edge towards Mount Hymettus.

Neighbourhoods like Zografou, Ilisia and Kaisariani are known for their student populations, local shops and proximity to green spaces. The area is quieter than the centre, with easy access to hiking trails and a more laid-back, everyday pace.

There aren’t that many eastern Athenian neighbourhoods, as beyond these areas you’re out of the range of Athens and heading into the wider Attica region – beyond these areas you have slightly more industrial areas like Koropi, Spata and the airport; we cover these areas in our Attica guide.

Kaisariani

Kaisariani is an eastern suburb bordering Mount Hymettus, famous for its historic monastery and forested hiking trails.
